Botox

Botox® is a commonly used, simple and safe, non-surgical injection treatment. It blocks impulses from the nerve to the tiny facial muscles that can cause wrinkles. With simple, highly effective Botox and dermal filler treatments, you can greatly improve your skin’s overall appearance-no more lines, wrinkles, or lost facial volume. Our Newport Beach medical spa helps patients achieve a rejuvenated and refreshed appearance with gentle Botox and dermal filler treatment.
WHY BOTOX® COSMETIC IS MORE THAN SKIN DEEP.
A combination of factors can cause facial lines. It’s not just about the cellular changes that may occur, or reduction of collagen, or damage caused by free radicals from the sun and the environment.
Repeated muscle contractions from frowning, squinting, or raising eyebrows cause skin to furrow and fold, gradually resulting in the formation of facial lines. BOTOX® Cosmetic is a quick 10-minute treatment that works beneath the surface and temporarily reduces the underlying muscle activity that causes moderate to severe frown lines, crow’s feet and forehead lines in adults – to help them look better.
Botox has seemingly magical powers, but no one used to want to admit they had it done. Now things have changed—so much so that Botox is regularly the subject of conversation.

Botox® specifically relaxes targeted muscles so they do not contract. The overlying skin in the treated area remains smooth and unwrinkled and the untreated facial muscles contract normally allowing normal facial expression to be unaffected.

Uses

In practice, Botox® can be used to improve facial appearance in many areas, such as:

  • Worry lines in the forehead
  • Frown lines
  • Laugh lines
  • Crow’s feet

Botox® also has other treatment uses, such as:

  • Reduce sweat production in underarms
  • Reduce sweaty palms and feet

For so many of us who would like to reduce the sweat from our armpits, Botox® shuts off the nerve signals to sweat glands to reduce the amount of sweat and subsequent odor that is produced by the treated area. Most patients have relief for 6 months before another treatment is needed. This is a very popular treatment for both men and women.

Treatment

Using a fine needle, a very small amount of Botox® is injected into several locations on the face. Most patients compare the sensation to a tiny bug bite. No sedation or local anesthetic is required and you can resume normal activities immediately. The actual injection process takes a quick 10 minutes. Our skilled practitioners will discuss your treatment goals and perform a facial analysis to determine the appropriate treatment areas for you. Ice can be used to numb the treatment area, or if you are concerned about discomfort, a topical numbing cream may be applied before administering your treatment. Treatment requires minimal downtime. So you can return to your daily routine immediately after you leave our office.

Common Questions asked about Botox injections

Will my face look overdone or unnatural?
BOTOX® Cosmetic is a technique-sensitive treatment. You can trust BOTOX® Cosmetic to deliver subtle results when you are treated by someone who is licensed, trained, and a medical expert in facial anatomy. So you’ll look like yourself—only with less noticeable lines. No one should be able to tell you’ve had anything done.

Is BOTOX® Cosmetic only for women?
Not at all! Many men make BOTOX® Cosmetic part of what they do to care for their appearance.
The number of men choosing treatments like BOTOX® Cosmetic has risen fast – in the past three years alone, men have received over one million botulinum toxin treatments. When surveyed, the majority of men say they want to look good and they’re bothered by the changes they see in the mirror. 80% would choose to treat their crow’s feet first, while 74% would prioritize their forehead lines, and 60% would most like to treat their frown lines.*

Will I see results quickly? How long do treatment effects last?
You may begin to notice results within 24 to 48 hours, full effect approx. 14 days with results lasting up to four months for moderate to severe frown lines. Remember that results vary from patient to patient though, so your practitioner will plan your next appointment based on your results and aesthetic goals.

Do I need to be over 40 to start using BOTOX® Cosmetic?
It’s not your age that determines when BOTOX® Cosmetic is right for you, it’s the severity of your lines. In fact, 64% of plastic surgeons report seeing a rise in cosmetic surgery or injectable treatments for patients in their early 30’s.
The truth is, everyone’s lines form differently. The timing can be influenced by a combination of factors, from cellular changes that may occur over time, to reduction of collagen, to genetic factors, or damage caused by free radicals from the sun and the environment.
Whenever your lines start to bother you, we are happy to speak with you here at Rox Spa Newport Beach. We can help you determine if treatment is right for you.

So let’s expand and learn about the growing list of uses for the wizard of injectables.

1. Manage acne.
Botox can curb oil production, reducing breakouts. While the amount needed to totally treat acne, would be so large they’d prevent you from constricting your facial muscles, at Rox Spa Newport Beach we can help manage acne by using tiny amounts of Botox injected very superficially help reduce oil production, and you can still have facial expressions. The most effective and common area for using Botox to curb oil production, is the forehead.

2. Get a temporary face-lift.
Botox can be used to shape the jaw, lift the tip of your nose, and relax wrinkles around eyes and forehead every three months.

3. Mimic a nose job.
So about that Botox nose-job thing: Around age 40, your nose can begin to sag and become more hooked, which can make your whole face appear droopy; Botox can help by lifting the nose and taking off years in about ten minutes. For this type of treatment, a doctor can inject Botox at the base of the nose (between the nostrils), which can release the depressor muscle that pulls the nose downward, making the whole face appear more lifted.

4. Soften your jawline and chin.
Grinding your teeth can make your jawline wider over time; here at Rox Spa Newport Beach, your practitioner can inject Botox into the area, which shrinks the muscle and narrows the jawline. The results, which last for approximately a year, can also have other positive effects, like making your cheeks appear more lifted and relieving the pain and soreness that can result from teeth grinding.

5. Tighten jowls.
If your jawline has become less defined, a little Botox along the muscles of the jawbone can pull the skin up for a crisp, defined effect.

6. Lift your lips.
Fillers aren’t the only way to fake voluminous, youthful-looking lips. Dermatologists can also inject tiny drops of Botox along the upper lip border in order to roll the top lip up and out slightly so it appears plumper. It’s subtler than collagen injections, and because the technique requires less Botox than other areas of the face, it’s also less expensive.

7. Smooth your neck.
Horizontal wrinkles can be temporarily erased with what some dermatologists call a “Botox necklace.” Tiny amounts are injected into the muscles above and below the lines, all the way around the neck; when they relax, the skin looks smoother. Neck muscles can start to enlarge and protrude as we age, resulting in the appearance of thick, tight cords. And if that didn’t already sound bad enough, the muscles in the neck and the superficial muscles of the face are connected to one another, so the neck can pull the rest of your facial features forward. Botox, once again, is the answer. Relaxing the neck muscles leads to softened wrinkles, gets rid of the cords, and lifts the face. Basically, it’s a nonsurgical face-lift. All of that sounds too good to be true until you remember that Botox breaks down every three to four months, so repeat visits will be necessary.

8. Youth-ify your décolleté.
With age (and sun exposure), lines can develop between the breasts for some women. To smooth them out, practitioners can inject Botox into the pectoral muscles.

9. Stop migraines.
It’s not totally understood how Botox works for migraines, the theory is that it blocks the pain signals being sent to the brain and that it relaxes the muscles in the head so they’re not as sensitive to pain. In this case, a practitioner would inject Botox into the forehead, temples, and scalp.

10. Calm excessive sweating.
Similar to the way Botox works on muscles, it prevents the message from your nerves from getting to your sweat glands, if the gland doesn’t get the signal, then it doesn’t produce sweat, which means there will be no wetness in that area. So a qualified practitioner can use Botox to treat hyperhydrosis (medically diagnosed excessive sweating) by injecting the area—say, the underarms or palms. This usage has been approved by the FDA, and for some people, it makes a major difference. It can be a life-changing treatment for people with pathological sweating. We recommend it for people who have tried clinical-strength and prescription antiperspirants with no success and for those people who have significant embarrassment from sweating or need to change clothing during the day because of it.
